Next month, students from the J.B. Young Opportunity Center in Davenport will put their restaurant skills to the test at an Iowa culinary competition.
On February 27th, the students, along with 150+ high school students from across the state on 30 teams will compete in Des Moines for the title of State Champion in culinary arts, restaurant management and cake decorating at the Iowa ProStart Invitational. The invitational is hosted by the Iowa Restaurant Association Education Foundation (IRAEF).
The contest challenges student teams to prepare a three-course meal in 60 minutes using only two butane burners. Professional judges from the industry will rate teams on teamwork, knife skills, safety and sanitation, product taste, appearance and more.
The Iowa championship will advance to the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Md. in April.
