Fort Hall police reported that the boy died following the attack on January 21. The boy's mother, Emily Islas, was also severely injured after she tried to fight off the dogs, which included two Rottweilers and two mixed breed dogs. Unable to fight off the dogs, Islas lay over her son in an attempt to protect him from the attacking animals.

A New Orleans serial killer who had already been sentenced to life in prison for murdering a botanist after Hurricane Katrina has pleaded guilty to killing three more women in a bid to avoid the death penalty.  Joseph Brant, 51, entered his pleas to three counts of first-degree murder on Tuesday, admitting that between 2007 and 2008, he sexually assaulted and shot dead Kirsten Brydum, 25; Jody Johnson, 47, and another woman who was never identified.

A South Carolina sheriff said a "miracle" saved the life of a deputy who was shot in the head in the line of duty last week. Oconee County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) Corporal Lucas Watts was critically wounded amid gunfire as he was making a traffic stop on South Highway 11 in Oconee County, Thursday afternoon. Gregory Wayne Maxwell, 50, is facing charges after Greenville County investigators found that he shot Watts and engaged in a shootout with deputies afterward, including five counts of attempted murder, according to a statement from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office (GCSO).
