On Valentine’s Day 2013, she was shot dead by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius at their home in Pretoria. He said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder hiding in the bathroom. Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder at the first trial and was sentenced to five years in prison.

On 3 December 2015, South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal overturned the conviction and instead convicted Pistorius of murder. He was sentenced to six years in prison, which was later increased by the Court of Appeal to 13 years and 5 months.
