Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington D.C. offers an exceptional multi-cultural and plurilingual experience for students from age 2 through 12th grade. In 1955, the school was founded with 11 students and has grown to 1178 students in 2023, representing over 80 nationalities and 55 spoken languages.
Rochambeau recently inaugurated its second permanent facility, a verdant, 11-acre, state-of-the-art Maplewood Primary school campus, further consolidating Rochambeau's longstanding presence in Bethesda, Maryland in tandem with its nearby Forest Road secondary school campus.
The maternelle (preschool) program, noted as the "crown jewel of the French school system," emphasizing play, written and oral skills, and learning to live in a community. Additionally, our younger students also benefit from focus on motor skills, expression, and movement. Parents appreciate the holistic approach implemented in this well-balanced comprehensive program.
Children can enroll in the school without any knowledge of French until the fourth grade. In addition to French, students have the option of learning a number of languages, including Arabic, German, Latin, and Spanish. Students participate in a number of extracurricular activities from athletics to arts to community service starting in kindergarten.
Rochambeau's vision is to empower students to thrive in an evolving world, to positively impact their communities and to value diversity and multiculturalism. Students graduate with a Maryland high school diploma plus either the French Baccalauréat and its bilingual or trilingual international options (BFI) or the International Baccalaureate (IB). Graduates of Rochambeau go on to study in both the US and internationally, attending some of the top universities around the world.
Rochambeau is one of the largest independent schools in the area and one of the largest French schools in the United States. Accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of Maryland, Rochambeau is the only school accredited by the French Ministry of Education in the Washington area. It is part of the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE), the world's largest educational network, with 566 schools in 138 countries. In 2021 Rochambeau joined the Mission Laique Francaise (MLF), which represents 108 schools in 37 countries, and also became an International Baccalaureate World School for the IB Diploma Program. Rochambeau will be a Candidate School for the Middle Year Program (9th and 10th grades) in Fall of 2023.
Rochambeau, The French International School's curriculum meets the world-class standards of the French and international education systems and builds on a tradition of welcome and accessibility for an increasingly global and diverse population of families in the Washington DC area.
