Nude awakening: Valerie Bertinelli gets a rude surprise on Ellen by a 'naked' man

She has spoken about her open attitude to nudity, admitting to spending time at home while naked.

But it appeared American actress Valerie Bertinelli wasn't quite so open-minded as she claimed when she was confronted by a naked man on a U.S. chat show yesterday.

The 50-year-old got a shock when a nude man snuck up and scared her while she was talking to Ellen DeGeneres.

Although his intimate areas had been pixelated for daytime TV viewers, Bertinelli suggested he may not have been as naked as he seemed when she remarked 'he wasn't naked'.

When DeGeneres mentioned she needed to be careful about being naked in the house because 'you don't wanna get a surprise'. Bertinelli agreed, unaware the man was sneaking up behind her.

Just moments after saying 'no', the naked man shouted 'raaaa' and prompted the actress to scream, before bursting into laughter.

She then looked to DeGeneres, saying: 'For a minute there I thought that was (my husband) Tom, you scared the hell out of me.'

DeGeneres then joked: 'He wears that to work every day - we just thought we'd take advantage of it.'

Also on the show, the former One Day At A Time star, spoke about her engagement to husband Tom Vitale, who she married in January.

But Bertinelli admitted she was in a bad mood at the time after a 'c**ppy dinner'.

She said: 'I went up to my room and was reading TIME magazine. Real romantic, aren't I?

'So I'm reading the magazine and he's got this little glint in his eye and he's lying in the bed next to me. I'm like, "Stop it. Leave me alone."

'He's like, "Really?" And I'm like "Really. I just want to read this magazine. It was a cr**py dinner. We're in Italy. It should've been an amazing dinner!"

'I was really p**sed off. And then I just closed my eyes and he just puts this little box on my chest. It was from Tiffany's.

'I said, "Why did you spend so much money? Why did you go to Tiffany's? You should've gone someplace else with cheaper jewellery."'
