"I Think I Was Chosen"
A pet owner has captured footage of the moment a trip to the park with her cat descended into chaos.
In a video that has been watched over 3.4 million times on TikTok, a user posting under the handle bueno_bear_ revealed how a seemingly ordinary day out with her feline companion Bueno took an extraordinary turn in the park when they found themselves mobbed by a clutter of stray cats.
Speaking on the video, Bueno's owner explained how she had originally taken her "scaredy cat" to the park "so he could breathe."
As the video starts, the cat owner can be seen petting Bueno. However, as soon as the camera pans around it becomes clear they are not alone with at least three other cats climbing over or rubbing themselves up against her.
"I have no idea who these are," she says on the clip. One ginger cat takes a particularly keen interest in Bueno and his owner, going in for kisses from the domesticated feline and getting a few strokes for their trouble from Bueno's owner who can be heard to say: "I think I was chosen."
Bueno's owner concludes that it is as if the ginger cat is asking: "Can I be your cat too?" and even goes as far as sitting on her lap—much to the apparent annoyance of Bueno.
There are an astonishing number of homeless cats across the United States. A 2014 study published in the journal Zoonoses and Public Health put the figure somewhere between 60 and 100 million.
This clutter of cats is just one tiny example of the situation playing out across much of the country and, right now, there's no simple fix. In this instance, many of those watching the video of Bueno's encounter with the strays hoped his owner would be willing to step up and take care of them.
"I would have to take everyone home," one user wrote with another commenting: "I would've come home with 3 more cats."
A third said: "I think your cat needs three new cat friends" while a fourth added: "cat distribution system has spoken, those are now your cats."
Some were simply thankful to Bueno's owner for taking an interest in the strays. "This breaks my heart, thank you for petting the strays they all deserve a home," one user said. Others were impressed at Bueno's calm reaction to the chaos.
"How come your kitty isn't hissing at em?" one user asked. "Mine doesn't let the other inch closer to me."
In a follow-up video, the user behind the bueno_bear_ account explained that while it had been her "dream since she was a child" to own a house full of cats, she simply did not have the capacity at present.
She has however made frequent trips back to the park to see the cats and has become further bonded with them, as this video shows.
Though she can't take them home right now, Bueno's owner reckons adopting at least one of the strays might be "doable in the future" if she can convince her husband.
