LEAF refrigerator can grow medical marijuana plants in just three months

Residents living in certain states where marijuana is legal are allowed to grow their own plants, but the process can be difficult if you’re not a skilled horticulturist.

Now, a Colorado based startup has designed a revolutionary refrigerator that completely takes care of the growing process - all you have to do is plant the seeds.

Dubbed the ‘Keurig for cannabis’, LEAF is equip with sensors to measure vitals like temperature, humidity and pH, and it uses nutrient filled cartridges to feed plants.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES?

All users have to do is plant the seeds inside of LEAF and the device does the rest.

The refrigerator monitors temperature, humidity, pH and plant height, and it uses specialty made cartridges to feed the plants nutrients.

Carbon filters are inside of the device to keep the smell from seeping out.

There is a drying process that takes two to five days.

Users have access to an accompanied app to monitor their plant, manually control the environment and share recipes and videos with other LEAF owners.

LEAF is the brainchild of Yoni Ofir, who uses medicinal cannabis to treat his anxiety.

‘As a medical cannabis users, it always intrigued me that with my prescription I’m allowed to grow my own cannabis plants,’ Ofir said during a TechCrunch event.

‘But when I looked into it, I was baffled by the amount knowledge required in order to grow high quality cannabis.’

This is where LEAF comes in handy, as users do not need previous knowledge to grow healthy marijuana plants in their home.

The fridge monitors everything from lighting to pH of the soil to ventilation.

It also tracks the measurements of the plants, for example, LEAF can tell if the plants are low on nutrients and will dispense more from the cartridges, reports Fitz Tepper with TechCrunch.

Or if the lighting is too low, it will ‘brighten the environment’.

However, users are able to take control of these functions via the accompanied app that is available for both iOS and Android.

The app is also a gateway to an entire social network of other LEAF owners, where users can swap recipes and share videos of their plants.

The fridge is 24 x 24 x 60 and has enough room for two plants that will each grow between four to five ounces of cannabis.

LEAF has designed carbon filters that sit inside of the refrigerator to neutralize odors, however the firm notes that the filter must be changed ‘ever 4-5 months to maintain effectiveness of smell prevention’.

There is also a drying mode inside of the fridge that can be activated after you’ve harvested the buds – this process takes between two and five days to complete.

You are able to watch the entire growing process via the app, as the firm has equip the fridge with cameras that lets you live stream the environment and they also put together time lapse videos for easy viewing.

THE POD-BASED SMART MARIJUANA VAPORIZER

CannaKorp has developed what is being hailed the ‘Keurig for weed’ – a vaporizer that releases marijuana from single-serving pods.

Users place the cannabis filled pod of their choice in the CannaCloud, push a button and within a minute can pull the vaporizer out and ‘enjoy a convenient and efficient vapor’.

CannaCloud is designed with a hygienic, one-way valve that can be easily detached for cleaning – and is dishwasher safe.

It uses a micro processor to control the system for optimal performance and ‘a great experience, including temperature, speed, time and air pressure.

Users can choose through various strains for their CannaCups such as sativa, indica, hybrid, and CBD-only strains.

Each pod is pre-ground cannabis flower that is sealed for locked in flavor, aroma and freshness.

The entire LEAF system retails for $2,990 and although it may sound expensive, the firm says the machine eventually pays for itself – the retail value of four to five ounces (one grow cycle) is about $1,200.

Also, each grow requires about $150 worth of nutrient cartridges and carbon filter refills.

Ofir did tell TechCrunch that they hope to lower the price and position the cartridges as the primary source of revenue – similar to how Keurig does their business.
